Why I love (fantasy) football.

Let's get this out right off the bat - I am Canadian. I love hockey, It's a great sport and I am one of the pathetic people the world calls "Leaf fans". As much as I love hockey and love the Leafs it just doesn't affect me in the way that football does.

Why is this? Well there's a couple reasons but I would say first and foremost is the way the league is setup and marketed. In this case "less is more". A Baseball season is 162 games and there is a game almost every day from May to October. A Hockey season consists of 82 games and your favorite team can be active up to 5 nights a week. The NFL regular season is 17 weeks. Your team plays 16 games playing 1 game a week with 1 week off during the course of the season. Less is more.

Professional football in the NFL is played on 3 days of the week, There's a prime time game on Monday and Thursday night in addition to the main event Sunday. Sunday kicks off with Boomer and ESPN Sunday Countdown at 10am and then there's games at 1pm, 4pm, and 8pm. It's fantastic entertainment.

It's a full day every week of televised sports. You can relax spend time with your friends, drink some beverages, eat some food and chirp about your fantasy score.

Fantasy Football is quite possibly the greatest thing to happen to the NFL (yes it's even better then Peyton Manning and his commercials). Fantasy enhances the game experience for me. I don't just care about my favourite team (Go Colts) I watch as many games as possible to follow the performance of my fantasy players. It makes every game compelling.

There's a lot a great reasons to play fantasy. Firstly it allows you to better understand the humor in "The League" but most important for me is the social aspect. It's something to talk about, something to bet on and chirp your friends about.

Remember though - you can make all the right moves, start all the right guys but a lot of fantasy still comes down to luck, and if your unlucky and come in last place your serving me beers in a dress at next years draft. Good luck boys!
