My First Comic Con and Second Brush with Greatness!

So for years and years I put it off. I didn't want to be that guy. I didn't want to be super nerdy comic book, cosplay dude...and I still don't but I couldn't pass up a chance to meet William Shatner. I mean he's the Shat, he's a legend and how much longer can he realistically keep this up? I had to go. Now I will preface this by saying I am a Star Trek fan but I never really latched on to the original series. I like films 2,4,6, but the series really never caught my interest. I was a child when The Next Generation was big and loved DS9 but the original series really never did it for me (even though I own and have seen them all). The reason I really wanted to go was to meet a legend who starred in and made one of my favorite shows, Boston Legal.

This summer William Shatner came to my local Con in Niagara Falls (a huge coup for a con less then five years old). The experience was a lot more fun then I originally anticipated. I got to see William Shatner (he signed my Wrath of Khan poster), I got to tell him what a fan I was (which he acknowledged), I got to have my photograph taken with him, and I got to spend a lot money doing so. I'm not going to get a lot into the expense because suffice it to say it was a lot but it's doesn't matter because I would do it again in a heartbeat. I didn't spend the money and get a poster signed or anything like that because I thought it would ever be worth anything (even though it may), I'm not delusional. I realize there are literally millions of Shatner autographs out there. I did it because it was worth it to me. It's worth it for the experience and to have such a thing hanging on my wall. Realistically if I was walking around a flea market or something and saw a framed and signed Wrath of Khan poster I would spend X amount of dollars so I t was definitely worth it to me. The only complaint I have is I obliviously wish it could be a more personal experience but William Shatner is huge, almost everyone at the Con was there to see him so that's hard.

Now the real question is would I go again? Absolutely. In the future it would be different for though. I wouldn't be going to meet one person knowing full well it was going to cost me a bunch of money and then it would be over. I would go for the experience of walking around, seeing people in their cosplay, getting my photograph taken with storm troopers and R2D2 (for free), and maybe even getting autographs and photo's taken with some of the lesser known celebrities (for a bargain price). I know my future experiences will never compete with that of my first but I really am looking forward to going again next summer.
