I've been waiting for hours to talk about this movie. First some brief background I have largely stayed away from many reviews of this film as I wanted to go in fresh. I was planning on going this upcoming weekend to see Steve Jobs so I went online (as one does) to check showtimes. After a limited two week run last night was the final night it was showing in my local cinema. So with 25 mins to spare my fiance and I hustled our way to the theater because I HAD to see this movie. I'm a big Apple fan boy and If I could afford more Apple devices, I would have more Apple devices. I've read many, many books about Jobs and to this point have seen all of the Steve Jobs movies including that horrible one with Justin Long. Moreover I am a huge Aaron Sorkin fan. Not seeing this movie before It left theaters was not an option. Despite the face that going to see this film caused me to only get 4 hours sleep (I worked at 6am this morning), I am very happy that I went.
This is not going to be a full blown review (like some of my other long winded posts), but I do want to just give a few quick thoughts. The thoughts will be so quick in fact i'm going to make them point form.
- On the whole I thought this film was fantastic
-The film was shot beautifully. The first third was shot on 16mm, the second on 35mm, and the third is most definitely digital. It does a wonderful job of conveying the passage of time.
-The film was very well acted, and Fassbender most certainly deserves an Oscar nomination
-The movie is arguably Aaron Sorkins best work (outside of The West Wing). The script is well thought out and I love the premise that it takes place during three of Steve Jobs keynotes. The dialogue as you expect also has the usual Sorkin snappiness.
-While I absolutely love this film and believe this is the best Steve Jobs film done to date it is not the best film to represent Steve Jobs (for that watch The Pirates of Silicon Valley). Sorkin took an awful lot of licence, which he admits, and probably does make it a better movie (just not a better Steve Jobs movie).
-The movie focuses way to much on Jobs' relationship with his daughter Lisa and makes no mention of widowed wife and other children.
- The movie shows John Sculley showing up throughout the later stages of Jobs' life when in reality Jobs never saw or spoke to Sculley after he originally left Apple.
- Steve Wozniak did not work at Apple when Jobs returned.
Those are just some quick thoughts. While I love this movie this still not the movie about Jobs I want to see. I want to see the movie where Jobs buys Pixar, and focuses more on his time rebuilding Apple and not his well attributed shortcomings. That movie however would be extremely boring and never happen.
