I am a longtime Gmail user. Of the free email services available it is most certainly superior. However, over the course of time, the interface has become somewhat bloated and unruly. A few years back Google introduced an optional secondary interface to Gmail named Inbox which it has since killed (fairly typical of Google). Gmail's lead designer from 2008-2012 has released a Chrome extension that has come to my rescue. Simplify Gmail modifies Gmails layout to more resemble Inbox by hiding the sidebar and eliminating the Gmail logo among other things. This combined with a pinned window and Google labs hidden feature to enable a pane view has made the Gmail interface near perfect.
